Project Status Update
Hardy/Upham Project: The project is advancing the Schematic Design (SD) under the direction of the Permanent Building Committee. The SD phase will conclude in June 2021 with the submission to the Massachusetts School Building Authority in July for their approval in August and a Town funding approval at an anticipated October Special Town Meeting and December Ballot Vote.
Hunnewell Project: The project is progressing in Construction Documents (CD's) and the Permitting process. The CD phase will conclude in August 2021 to proceed into bidding to bring a construction budget to an anticipated October Special Town Meeting and December Ballot Vote.
Hunnewell Project: The 100% DD Presentation was continued.
On 12/3/20, the PBC was presented Hunnewell project, permitting, and engineering discipline updates (HVAC, Electrical, Plumbing, Commissioning and Sustainability.) The Hardy/Upham Preferred Schematic Option was also presented, as the project transitions from the SBC to the PBC.
On 10/22/20 the SBC voted to submit the Preferred Schematic Report to the MSBA recommending Hardy option 7b.2.
The Board of Selectmen voted on 10/19 to support the SBC's recommendation of Hardy option 7b.2 as the preferred schematic option.
On 10/15, the designer responded to the SBC's conditions to option 7b. The SBC unanimously agreed that Hardy option 7.b.2 responds well to their conditions.
The School Committee voted on 10/13 to support the SBC's recommendation of Hardy option 7b, with conditions, as the preferred schematic option.
The recommended preferred schematic Hardy option 7b was presented to the Board of Selectmen and School Committee on 10/1/20.
The School Building Committee (SBC) voted to recommend Hardy option 7b as the preferred schematic option at their meeting on 9/24/20. They attached conditions to their vote regarding additional required development of site circulation, reduction of retaining walls, reduction of zoning nonconformance and creation of a connection of the gymnasium and cafetorium to the fields.
Community Forum: Residents were invited to take part in the third community forum for the Hardy/Upham project on Thursday, September 17 at 7 p.m. The forum, hosted by the School Building Committee. The Presentation can be viewed here.
Hardy/Upham Project: Due to the Covid-19 public emergency, meetings with the Permanent Building Committee and School Building Committee are being conducted using a Zoom virtual platform.
Hardy/Upham Project: In April, the School Building Committee reached consensus to put the Hardy/Upham feasibility study on hold until late July. The SBC will resume its analysis and deliberations beginning July 30, with further meetings planned for August and September. The SBC expects to make a final recommendation in September on whether to build at Hardy or Upham with the MSBA.
Hunnewell Project: The Hunnewell project has been overseen by the Permanent Building Committee since design funds were approved in December 2019. Schematic Design phase is complete and documents have been approved by the Permanent Building Committee and the School Committee. The permitting application for a Project of Significant Impact have been submitted to the Planning Board in anticipation of a September public hearing date.
Schedule Update: Both projects remain on track to receive construction funding at the same time, but the target date for Town Meeting and voter approval has been pushed back to Fall 2021. Accordingly, approximate overall completion schedules have been pushed back to the first or second quarter of 2024 (Hunnewell) and the first or second quarter of 2025 (Hardy/Upham).
The Town of Wellesley is undertaking two separate elementary school building projects in order to meet the current and long-term needs of its students and address significant deficiencies at the Hardy, Hunnewell, and Upham schools.
These two projects are being executed by the Town's School Building Committee (SBC) and its Permanent Building Committee (PBC), with the support of the School Committee and the Board of Selectmen. Planning is ongoing, and the earliest a new school would open is 2024.

The feasibility study for the Hardy/Upham project, in partnership with the Massachusetts School Building Authority, began in late August 2019. The SBC anticipates making a recommendation on whether the new school will be built at Hardy or Upham in September 2020, with construction to begin in 2023 and completion by 2025.
